What to expect when you have a spray tan
Deciding to have a spray tan either at home or in the salon can be daunting especially if you have body issues, which needless to say the vast majority of both women and men have. This page is here to give you information on what to expect when you step into the spray tanning booth beforehand so you can be fully prepared.
When you arrive at the salon or the therapist arrives at your home she will always make you feel comfortable and make sure that you do not feel self conscious. Remember that she will have seen hundreds of women who have had spray tans in many different shapes and sizes. This treatment is supposed to make you feel good about yourself, so take a deep breath and relax!
Before you arrive at the salon you will have had to do a number of things prior to having your spray tan. You will have had to exfoliate your skin, moisturizers and shave. The reason for all of these steps is to ensure that there is a clean and smooth base for the fake tan product to be sprayed onto. This will also ensure that any dry areas do not become clogged with tan.
You will then be taken to the room with the spray tanning equipment in and may be asked if you would like to wear disposable pants and bra. The reason for this is to ensure that your own underwear is not discoloured from the fake tan. Some people opt to only wear a small set of pants and no bra to ensure that they do not have extensive tan lines. This is common and tan therapists have witnessed many women stripping in order to achieve no tan line altogether.
Barrier cream will then be added to your palms and dry areas when you have undressed to ensure that the tan does not touch your palms and goes on smoothly in dry areas. It also ensures that your tan is streak free.
The spray tan machine will then be turned on and can sometimes make loud noises as the generator is what pushes the spray tan out of the machine. The spray tan gun will then be held 12" away from your body. The tan will then be applied in slow even strokes. There will be a number of different positions which you will be asked to stand in to ensure that your tan is even, from standing with your legs slightly apart to holding your arms out wide and then turning to the left with one foot in front of the other. This is to make sure that all of your body is covered evenly. Your face and neck will also be sprayed with fake tan to give you an even colour, you will have to hold your breath for a few moments when you are having a spray tan as you may inhale the fumes.
It can take as little as ten minutes to have a spray tan and maybe another ten minutes to prep and dry. You can easily get a spray tan in your lunch hour if you are looking to be bronzed and back at the office looking as if you have just stepped of a plane. If you are having a spray tan in your lunch hour make sure that you have the spray tan when the weather is dry to avoid the product running, which can happen if you apply it and then step into the rain.
